Hauling service is the transfer of goods from the producer to the consumer that requires different means of transport. It is also called multimodal transport. It can therefore be a national or international hauling service. This type of service facilitates a global supply chain concept. Companies gain in efficiency by being able to take advantage of different means of transport to reduce costs.

Types of transportation and hauling

There are different types of transportation and hauling, but six are the most frequently used:

  • Dock hauling: Trucks move cargo from production or rail depots to the dock for loading onto ships.
  • Internal haulage (IMX): Cargo is moved within the intermodal layout.
  • Intercarrier hauling: Cargo is transferred between carriers (e.g., rail to ocean).
  • Transshipment haulage: Moves containers to alternate locations when a hub is overloaded.
  • Express haulage: Urgent and rapid delivery of cargo.
  • Door-to-door transportation: Direct delivery from center to final customer.

Differences between transport and freight

Transport refers to the company that performs the movement, including vehicle, loading, unloading, and paperwork. Freight refers only to the mode of transport, often shared among multiple shippers.

Transport offers more control and tailored services. Freight is generally cheaper and shared.

FTL and LTL freight

LTL (Less than Truckload): Shipments that do not fill a truck (1–6 pallets), sharing space with other loads.

FTL (Full Truckload): A full truck is used for one shipment. Ideal for fragile goods or fixed-date delivery.

Types of ocean freight

Understanding freight rates is crucial. Common terms include:

  • Liner term: Includes all transport stages.
  • Free In: Buyer pays for unloading and discharge.
  • Free Out: Buyer pays for unstowage and unloading.
  • Free In Out Stowed: Only transport is paid; other costs are split.
  • Free In Line Out: Excludes loading costs.
  • Line In Free Out: Excludes unloading costs.
