Bunkering Services is a system used to supply fuel to ships, which can even be carried out on the open sea. Although, until now, most ships around the world operate with diesel engines and, therefore, with diesel fuel, the use of liquefied natural gas or LNG is now being encouraged. It is a greener, more economical and efficient alternative, promoted by institutions.

What is IMO 2020 and how does it affect shipping?

In January 2020, there were major changes in terms of ship fuel. The international maritime organization made it mandatory, as of that date, to operate with fuel that did not contain more than 0.5% sulfur. This was the first step towards the decarbonization of the shipping industry, set for 2050.

To comply with this standard, shipping lines have opted for one of three options:

  • Switching to sulfur-free diesel (ultra-low-sulfur fuel oil or a mix of diesel blends).
  • Installing scrubbers to neutralize polluting gases, allowing continued use of high-sulfur fuel oils.
  • Using alternative fuels like LNG, which is sulfur-free and reduces emissions up to 90%.

At Suisca Group, we adapt to all our customers’ circumstances and facilitate the complete fuel supply they need. We offer a 24-hour professional service with full confidence.

Types of bunkering or fuel supply systems

  • Pipe-to-ship (PTS): Fuel supplied via a terminal on the dock connected by pipeline.
  • Ship-to-ship (STS): Fuel transferred from one specialized ship to another (multi-fuel barges or LNG supply vessels).
  • Truck-to-ship (TTS): Fuel delivered via tanker trucks dockside.

LNG, the maritime fuel of the immediate future

LNG, liquefied at -160 ºC, reduces its volume by 600 times, meaning tank sizes can remain practical. It‘s also the government‘s favored option, supported by Royal Decree 335/2018. This regulation encourages LNG bunkering in Spanish ports.

Two types of engines support LNG:

  • Dual engines: Operate with diesel, fuel oil, or LNG.
  • Gas-only engines: Specifically designed for LNG.

ISO 20519:2021 Standard for LNG bunkering of vessels

This standard ensures safe and environmentally friendly LNG bunkering. It outlines:

  • Hardware to control transfer systems and vapor generation.
  • Established operating procedures.
  • Fuel delivery documentation from the LNG supplier.
  • Trained and qualified personnel.
  • Compliance with ISO and state regulations for LNG facilities.
